#450 Brussels, Belgium

Grand Hornu
The Major Mining Sites of Wallonia in southern Belgium are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They comprise:
  • Grand Hornu
  • Bois-du-Luc
  • Bois du Cazier
  • Blegny-Mine
During the industrial revolution in the 19th century, mining and the heavy industry that relied on coal formed a major part of Belgium's economy. Most of this mining and industry took place in the sillon industriel ("industrial valley" in French), a strip of land running across the country where many of the largest cities in Wallonia are located. The named locations of this World Heritage Site are all situated in or near the area of the sillon industriel.

Grand-Hornu is an old industrial mining complex in Hornu in the municipality of Boussu, Belgium. It was built by Henri De Gorge between 1810 and 1830. It is a unique example of functional town-planning. Today it is owned by the province of Hainaut, which houses temporary exhibitions in the buildings.
