José Protasio Mercado Rizal y Alonzo Realonda (June 19, 1861 - December 30, 1896) was a Filipino nationalistnovelistpoetophthalmologistjournalist and revolutionary. He is widely considered one of the greatest heroes of the Philippines. He was the author of Noli Me TángereEl Filibusterismo and a number of poems and essays. He was executed on December 30, 1896, by a squad of Filipino soldiers of the Spanish Army.

Maria Lea Carmen Imutan Salonga KLD (born February 22, 1971), better known as Lea Salonga (/ˈlə səˈlɒŋɡə/), is a Filipina singer and actress who starred in the lead role of Kim in the musical Miss Saigon, for which she won the OlivierTonyDrama DeskOuter Critics and Theatre World awards. Salonga is the first Filipino artist to sign to an international record label (having been signed to Atlantic Records in 1993). She is also the first Philippine-based artist to have received a major album release and distribution deal in the United States (the second being Charice Pempengco with her 2010 album Charice), and one of the best-selling Filipino artists of all time, having sold over five million copies of her albums worldwide.

Emmanuel "MannyDapidran PacquiaoPLH (/ˈpæki./ pak-ee-owTagalog: [pɐkˈjaʊ]; born December 17, 1978), is a Filipino world champion professional boxer. At 32 he was elected to the Philippine House of Representatives. He has also been involved in basketball, acting, and singing.

He is the first and only eight-division world champion, in which he has won ten world titles, as well as the first to win the lineal championship in four different weight classes. According to Forbes, he was the 14th highest paid athlete in the world as of 2013.

Rafael "Paeng" NepomucenoOrder of Lakandula (born January 30, 1957 in Manila) is a six-time World Bowling Champion Filipino bowler. He has won the World Cup of Bowling four times (1976, 1980, 1992 and 1996). Nepomuceno has also won the World's Invitational Tournament in 1984 and the World Tenpin Masters championship in 1999.

In its September 2003 issue, the Prestigious Bowlers Journal International named Paeng as the Greatest International Bowler of All Time.

The arrival of Ferdinand Magellan in HomonhonEastern Samar in 1521 marked the beginning of Spanish colonization. In 1543, Spanish explorer Ruy López de Villalobos named the archipelago Las Islas Filipinas in honor of Philip II of Spain.

Mount Apo is a large solfataricpotentially active stratovolcano in the island of MindanaoPhilippines. With an elevation of 2,954 metres (9,692 ft) above sea level, it is the highest mountain in the Philippine Archipelago and is located between Davao City and Davao del Sur province in Region XI and Cotabato province in Region XII. The peak overlooks Davao City 45 kilometres (28 mi) to the northeast, Digos City 25 kilometres (16 mi) to the southeast, and Kidapawan City 20 kilometres (12 mi) to the west.
