The Åland Islands or Åland (Swedish: Åland, Finnish: Ahvenanmaa) is a region of Finland that consists of an archipelago lying at the entrance to the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea. It is autonomous, demilitarised and is the only monolingually Swedish-speaking region in Finland. Collectively, the islands in the archipelago form the smallest region of Finland, constituting 0.49% of its land area and 0.50% of its population.

Gustaf Adolf Mauritz Erikson (1872, Lemland – 1947) was a ship-owner from Mariehamn, in the Åland islands, famous for the fleet of windjammers he operated to the end of his life, mainly on the grain trade from Australia to Europe.
Erik Stefan Lindfors, known as Stefan Lindfors (born 3 May 1962, Mariehamn) is a Finnish industrial designer, interior designer, film-maker and sculptor.
Lindfors first achieved public and critical attention with his lamp “Scaragoo”, first unveiled at the Milan Furniture Fair in 1988, and then manufactured by the company Ingo Maurer in Munich. He has also designed objects for the Finnish design manufacturers Arabia, Iittala, Marimekko and Martela. In addition to design, Lindfors has also made short films, TV programmes, commercials (including: Nokia, and DNA Oy) and pop videos (including HIM's ”Funeral of Hearts” - which received music magazine Kerrang!’s award for "Best Music Video 2004").
Janne Sven-Åke Holmén (born 26 September 1977) is a Finnish former long-distance runner.
Holmén's biggest achievement was winning the marathon event in the 2002 European Championships in Athletics in Munich, Germany, finishing in 2:12:14. In the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece, Holmén finished in 22nd place, with the time 2:17:50. In the 2006 European Championships in Athletics in Gothenburg, Sweden, Holmén finished in seventh place with a time of 2:13:10. In the 2007 World Championships in Athletics Janne Hólmen took ninth place with time of 2:19:36. In the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China, Holmén finished in 19th place, with the time 2:14:44.
The town (Mariehamn) was named after the Russian empress Maria Alexandrovna. Mariehamn was founded in 1861, around the village of Övernäs, in what was at the time part of the municipality of Jomala.
Orrdalsklint, at 129.1 metres (423,6 ft) above sea level, is the highest point on the autonomous region of Åland Islands in Finland. The hill is located in the municipality of Saltvik, some 7 kilometers Northeast of the town center.
