The Hmong are believed to have been the original inhabitants of the Yangtze River in ancient China. The expansion of neighboring Chinese from the north forced the Hmong to migrate southwards to Laos and Vietnam. Over the centuries, many wars have been waged against the Chinese. Greatly outnumbered, the Hmong suffered heavy casualties.

Futile efforts to establish themselves as an independent people apart from the expanding Chinese led to the Hmong's exodus further south, eventually into Southeast Asia. From here, they made their way into the territories of the European colonies that later gained independence and became known as Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar.

Today, the Hmong are found in the Thai Highlands, although some are found elsewhere within the country. The Hmong are becoming well integrated into Thai society as well as being the most successful. The current population of Hmong in Thailand is estimated to be roughly 151,080.

The national flag of Bhutan (Dzongkhaཧྥ་རན་ས་ཀྱི་དར་ཆ་) is one of the national symbols of Bhutan. The flag is based upon the tradition of the Drukpa Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism and features Druk, the Thunder Dragon of Bhutanese mythology. The basic design of the flag by Mayum Choying Wangmo Dorji dates to 1947. A version was displayed in 1949 at the signing of the Indo-Bhutan Treaty. A second version was introduced in 1956 for the visit of Druk Gyalpo Jigme Dorji Wangchuk to eastern Bhutan; it was based upon photos of its 1949 predecessor and featured a white Druk in place of the green original.
